domain

Hi :) I bought my domain name with WordPress but decided not to use them as the host/provider as my website in the end. The domain is now showing as a parked one. Does this mean if I find a provider, or decide to make my website myself from scratch, I still have the rights to the domain?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there
Your best option is to change the Domain name servers:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/You can take your domain with you, as outlined in:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/Unfortunately,
Note: It is only possible to transfer a domain 60 days after the registration date. This 60 day lock is required by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and cannot be waived. More info here.
You are within the 48 hour window for cancelling your domain completely, as discussed in:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/faq-renewing-and-canceling/#cancel-domain
and you might be able to pick it up again through your new hosting provider, but there is no guarantee you will be able to get it back –Canceling a domain means that you are giving up the right to use that domain. Canceling a domain can cause your site to stop working and the domain can be lost permanently. You should only cancel a domain if you are sure you no longer want it and are okay with the potential of someone else registering and using it.
So you are left with the choices of:
- Changing the name servers (my favorite choice)
- cancelling your domain and hope you can retrieve it
- wait the 60 days before you can transfer it
best

Okay thank you. My domain ‘robynforeman.com’ is not showing up in my purchases section so I guess that means I have cancelled it. However, if this is the case and I am within the 48 hour window shouldn’t I be eligible for a refund? and how come, if it’s cancelled, the domain is still parked?
Thanks -
Hi Robyn
So the domain is not in your account, and a whois shows that it is indeed “parked” here at WordPress.com (Automattic). I have tagged this thread so a genuine WordPress person can advise you how best to proceed from here. Please be patient, they are pretty busy folks!
best,

Howdy –
The parked domain status is due to the domain being canceled.
In order to use this domain at another provider we will need to restore it here first. Otherwise it will be unavailable for use anywhere until next year.
The domain will need to be 60 days old before it can be transferred away from WordPress.com to a new provider as part of the ICANN regulations. Until that time you will point the domain to your new site through DNS changes. Here’s how: https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/
I’ll be happy to answer any additional questions about this process.

Hi Liz – thank you for your answer :)
I am going to need to make a new website pretty quickly as I have the end of year exhibition for my degree and will need an online portfolio for this, and I can use another domain, which is fine.
Is it possible, do you know, to totally cancel the domain robynforeman.com and receive a refund on it? And if it is possible to cancel it completely, how long it takes for this to be in effect?Thank you :)

The domain is available for use, I’ve restored it to your account. You’ll see it under My Sites.
You can build a site with this domain here at WordPress.com right now, or you can point the name servers to show another site (right now). The domain can be used, it just can’t be transferred until it is 60 days old.
I just want to make sure that you understand that it can be used, and that it is restored, you just can’t “transfer” it quite yet. Any questions about that?
A complete cancelation is also an option if you have no plans to ever use that domain again. When we cancel a domain it is not able to be registered again until next year. At that time it is sold to the public again. It’s a long process.
I’ll be happy to help you with the site if you decide to build it here at WordPress.com. A good start will be to know which features you need in the theme and what type of site you want to build.
