  https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/#grace-period talks about the increasing difficulty of regaining a domain after it expires. I have tagged this with modlook so a real WordPress person can tell you what it is going to take.

  That domain is in redemption. We can help get it back. To do this, our domain partner charges an $80 fee that I need to confirm that you’ll agree to pay before we go forward.
  Start to finish this process takes about 48 hours.

  Alternatively, you can wait for the domain to be released back for public sale. There’s no notification of when this will happen. If someone else gets to it first you’re out of luck.
