Domain

What plan do I need if I already have a Domain name with Google G Suite. Is there a number I can call?

  • Hi there,

There are basically two ways to use a custom domain on WordPress.com, you can either map the domain to the site on WordPress.com or transfer it to WordPress.com if your domain exceeds 60 days old.

Either way will require you to have an upgraded plan for your WordPress.com site, and it can be any paid plan of your choice, depending on your requirements. The cheapest plan to use a custom domain is the Personal Plan which is $48 per year.
    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

You can see the features of the plans here.

FYI, WordPress.com does not provide phone support. Paid plan users get access to live chat and private email support whereas free plan users post questions on this forum to get help.

Do let us know if you have further questions, we’ll be glad to help.

    Hi,
How much will it cost to map the domain to the site on WordPress.com or transfer it to WordPress.com. Apart from my monthly plan cost and also will it cost any extra if I get a Basic plan now and want to upgrade to Deluxe later. Thanks

  • There’s no additional cost to map your custom domain to the WordPress.com site or transfer the domain to WordPress.com once you have purchased a plan. All paid plans come with a free credit that allows you to either register a new domain, transfer to WordPress.com or map it to the site hosted on WordPress.com.

So if you purchased the Personal Plan at $48 per year, that’ll be the only subscription fee you’re required to pay every year to renew. Please note that there’s no monthly payment option available for WordPress.com subscription plans. All plans are charged annually or bi-annually and renewal will be done every year before your plan expires.

WordPress.com has Personal, Premium and Business plans. You can upgrade anytime as you wish. If you upgraded your plan within the same year of purchase, you’ll only need to pay the difference between the cost of the two plans.

Can you tell me the difference between mapping your custom domain to the WordPress.com site and transferring the domain to WordPress.com.

Which one of these are popular or most people prefer.
Will I do the mapping or transfer from WordPress.com platform or will I have to contact godaddy to complete that process

  • Mapping a domain means that your domain remains registered with Godaddy but the site is hosted and managed by WordPress.com. In this case, you’re paying GoDaddy for the domain renewal fee and also the WordPress.com subscription to map your custom domain.

Transferring domain is having your domain and site hosted and managed by WordPress.com. So you only need to pay WordPress.com on the yearly subscription plan.

Like I mentioned in my first reply, it depends on whether your domain already exceeds the transfer prohibited period of 60 days to see if you need to map the domain or transfer it. The most cost-effective way, of course, is just paying one party for the domain and hosting.

[Scenario 1: Domain is less than 60 days old]
A domain that is less than 60 days old is not able to be transferred to another registrar. You can choose to map the domain to WordPress.com first. When the domain reaches 60 days old, initiate the transfer process.

To map a domain, you may need help from GoDaddy to point the nameservers to WordPress.com. See the details here.

[Scenario 2: Domain is more than 60 days old]
Since your domain is over 60 days old, you can initiate the transfer process to have the domain transferred to WordPress.com.

For more information on requirements to transfer a domain, see here.

In short, domain transfer allows you to manage your site and domain here on WordPress.com, at one single place. Also, when you have an upgraded plan on WordPress.com, you’re entitled to receive direct support from the staff via live chat and private email.

    Good,
So the company transferred the domain from godaddy to G Suite to be able to use google drive and the other stuff that comes with G Suite. In this case we don’t to godady to host our website so do we just map the domain to our site on WordPress.com. Take a look at our old site on godday patriotmedical.org

  • I’m not sure how it works on G Suite if you transferred the domain to WordPress.com but you can add your existing G Suite account to your WordPress.com site. See here. I’m adding a modlook tag for staff comment on this part.

I checked out your site patriotmedical.org, it’s built using ASP.NET, not WordPress. If you create a site on WordPress.com and wish to transfer the content from your current site to the new WordPress.com site, you have to use the Drag and Drop/HTML builder method as stated in this guide.

And I see that you allow customer login to your site. Do you mind sharing with us any functionality that you wish to have on your WordPress.com site? This will help us to point you in the right direction to sign up a plan that suits your requirement.

  • How long will it take to transfer the domain to WordPress? Can it take up to 7 days?

According to the link on transferring your domain to WordPress.com I sent previously, it’ll take five to seven days for the transfer process to be completed.

Will I like need to initiate a transfer token first?

Yes, correct. As part of the steps to prepare your domain to be transferred, as stated in the support document, you need to get a transfer code, authorization key, or an auth code to be entered on the WordPress.com form when you perform the domain transfer.

Once you have completed the domain transfer process and received the confirmation email that the domain is already on WordPress.com, you can then set the domain to point to WordPress.com servers.

  • Howdy –

I’m following up on the Modlook tag but it looks as if everything has been explained.

Write back if you are still having any confusion about the domain options. It’d be great if you can share the actual domain in question too, this way we can have a look at the status.

  • Hi staff-zinnia,

Thank you for looking into this.

The domain is patriotmedical.org. And we need help from staff to advise us on my doubt below.

I’m not sure how it works on G Suite if you transferred the domain to WordPress.com but you can add your existing G Suite account to your WordPress.com site. See here. I’m adding a modlook tag for staff comment on this part.

  • Hi there!

Thank you for all the help staff-zara!

Regarding your question on whether G Suite will continue to work if the domain is transferred to WordPress.com, the short answer is yes. There is some configuration needed and it’s all covered here:

  • Thanks @fstat for the confirmation. :)

Hi @patriotmedicalohio, do let us know if you have further questions.
