Hi there, you don’t have to immediately upgrade to a plan/domain in order to create a website here on WordPress.com. This page outlines the features of both the free and plan upgrades: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Let us know if you have any other question about this.

yes, but when I click free trail, I was faced with the following option:

Transfer your domain away from your current registrar.
    or
Map your domain without moving it from your current registrar.

I am currently using NameCheap for domain name and email hosting and I am not sure what is the better option for me, so I don’t want to have to make the decision to transfer WP or pay $11 to stay with Namecheap!

All I want to do is to try to create a website using WP, I never created a website before so don’t know what to expect hence there is a possibility that I will ask someone else to do it for me if it proves too difficult or too time consuming.

What is your advice for me? Thank you!

Hello again, try going to the pricing page at https://wordpress.com/pricing/ and clicking the free option on the left. When you get to the next page where it asks you to say what your website is about, click “continue” without filling out anything on that page. On the next page, do not add your current NameCheap domain. Just add whatever you want to appear before “dotwordpressdotcom” and then select the free option that appears.

You might need to play around a bit with variations on that name so you don’t end up with a name with a dozen numbers after it. Make sure you are only selecting the FREE website option. If it isn’t immediately apparent, it might be below any custom domains offered.

Try that and let us know how that goes.
