  I signed up for a free site now when I pick a domain it says I have to pay?

  Yes – a custom domain is a paid feature. The Personal plan, $4/month (as of this writing) is the simplest option for getting a custom domain at an affordable price.

  Alternately, you can purchase a domain elsewhere and have it mapped to your WordPress.com site.
