domain

I would not be interested in transferring the domain I have to wordpress, and I have no plans to pay any fee. I thought there was a free version of wordpress. Is this not so?

In that case just click on “start with free” at this link: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Thank you very much for your reply.
I have a website which I want to migrate to another hosting company, but it is necessary that I create a new website, and that is why I was thinking in wordpress. It is a simple informative website. with a blog. One question is, what happens if I require more than 3 Gbs?
    Thanks

  • Hi there,

The 3GB only refers to storage space for media files, i.e. images. All our paid plans include extra storage on top of that should you run out, but if you properly optimize your images for the web before uploading them the 3GB free storage should last you years.

    Optimize Your Images

All WordPress.com sites, including on our free plan, come with unlimited storage for the site itself, so there is no maximum number of posts at which your site will be “full”.

Fantastic! I only have about 5 images and the rest are blog articles, which -as per your comment i will be more than fine with the 3 Gb.

By the way, How do you “optimize” images?
    Thanks!

    Hello!

I have no plans to transfer my domain to wordpress as I stated on my first post, and was told that I could then have to start with “free”…..

If it is not free, I would not be interested.
Kokkieh, as a member of the staff, would you care to clarify?
    Thanks

  • Hi coccas,

I apologize, I made a mistake. I thought you would bring your domain to WordPress.com.
Everything Kokkieh said is absolutely correct.

    Cheers.

It would seem that creating a wordpress website is more involved than I first thought. I clicked on Start>domains, Clicked on Already own a domain, Map your domain. I entered my domain, clicked and all I got is 5 paid options to create a website….. Where is the free plan? Is there a an essential tutorial clearly showing the steps and where to click to create a free website with wordpress?

    Thanks you for any help

  • To use your own domain, even if you just map it here from another provider, requires a paid plan. Specifically, Personal or higher, as the Blogger plan can only be used with a single .blog domain:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

There’s no limit to the number of domains you can map to any site, but the site must have a paid plan active before you can map any domain to it.

Using the free plan is only possible if you use the free *.wordpress.com or .blog subdomain that’s created automatically when you create a site with us.

By the way, How do you “optimize” images?

There’s a detailed guide in the support page I linked to above, but put simply, a computer screen can only display an image so big, and added to that your site’s theme has its own maximum display sizes. So using an image with bigger dimensions than your site will actually display it, just wastes storage space.

Optimizing an image for the web means resizing images to the actual size you’ll be using them at before you upload them to your site. Optionally you can also run the image through a tool that further optimizes the file itself to reduce the file size.

    Hello kokkieh!

First, an apology because you had already posted a link about optimizing images, which I did not read.

Concerning the use of my own domain, I must admit I am quite confused. I don’t understand how would I build a website without a domain…? How would anyone find my website if there is no domain? How do I start creating such a website?
    Thanks!

All new sites created on WordPress.com automatically gets a free address, either on a subdomain of WordPress.com, or on one of a selection of .blog domains we own. Your site is fully accessible at that free address, just as it would be at a custom domain, and this free address never expires and is never removed. Even if you add a custom domain, that free address still exists in the background, and is yours for as long as your site exists with us.

    Hello kokkieh!

My site is very simple. I write occasional articles and there is hardly traffic from third parties. Would in your opinion be easier if I create a free wordpress blog?
Would I be able to use the name of my domain?
If you think this would be easier, could you kindly provide the ling?
    Thanks

  • Hi there,

Would in your opinion be easier if I create a free wordpress blog?

You can start with a free blog and you can upgrade later if needed.

Would I be able to use the name of my domain?

It’s not possible to use your domain on the Free or Blogger plan. To either transfer your domain on point it here you would need a plan. You can read more about that here:
