Hello @mfrohling,
It is great you are considering WordPress as your option.
Firstly, I would like to bring to your notice that there are two versions of WordPress – WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Learn more about the difference between the two here:
Once you understand the differences between the two, if you choose to go ahead with the open source software, please take your question to a more experienced community in the WordPress.org forums:
https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
And now, if you choose to bring your site to life on WordPress.com. You are in the right forum and please read on.
On WordPress.com (here) it is a managed environment, which means your hosting costs are included with an upgrade plan of your choice, and WordPress.com is your host.
The domain can be connected to WordPress.com with 2 different options.
1. Map it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
2. Transfer it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/I hope this was of help. All the best with any choice you make.
