  Hello,
  Yes, of course, you can build your website as you wish with the free domain included in the free plan; Later, If you want, you can then upgrade to a paid plan and choose a custom domain at any time you want.

  If you want, you also have the option to change your address while still keeping the free plan (for example, if your blog has smile.wordpress.com or smile.home.blog you can change it to be mybestsmile.wordpress.com). You can do so by following the instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-site-address/

  Do note that once you change the “example” part of example.wordpress.com, the old address will stop working and it will never be available for use as a WordPress.com domain.

  But you can continue using a free address containing “.wordpress.com” until that point :)
