  Hi, I am in the process of initiating my workdpress account and I have questions regarding the domain. Would you be able to explain the difference between transferring my domain from my current registrar or mapping my domain without transferring it? Are there other advantages other than controlling everything from one site and a slight difference in yearly fee?

  Hi trainingfourpaws,

  These are the main differences between the two options:

  Domain mapping

  • The domain remains registered with your current provider and will need to be renewed through them each year.
  • The process creates a connection between the domain and WordPress.com.

  Transferring to WordPress.com

  • The domain will be renewed through us each year (after transfer).

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

  Both options would require a paid plan on WordPress.com.

  Being able to manage the site and domain through a single account is the main advantage of transferring. Also, we automatically renew the domain for another year once the transfer has been completed successfully :)
