It depends on you. If you transfer your domain, for instance, the registration and billing of the domain will be moved to WordPress.com allowing you to manage both domain and site from your WordPress.com account, that’s one less password to remember and you’ll also receive 1 free year extension on the domain.

With mapping, you’ll manage most of the domain settings with the registrar including renewals, to associate that domain, you’ll be required to change name servers and have a paid subscription at WordPress.com.
