    I’ve got a free site and want to upgrade to a proper domain- paying for the domain that comes up with wordpress – does that include the hosting or is there another fee for that.

    Regarding your question, In order to register or use a custom domain on your WPcom site, you’ll need to upgrade to one of our paid plans. All WPcom plans include hosting and your custom domain registration is included in your plan for the first year. After that you would pay for the domain renewal and your plan separately.
