I deleted my domain here and registered with another host in hopes of using the same name . But why is the domain I want is said to be taken (supposedly by me, although I have deleted it). It’s apparently locked. How do I manage this situation?

Cancelled domains are not released immediately, and it can take anything from a few days to over a year before a cancelled domain becomes available again, if at all. You should never cancel a domain that you still want to use, as when you cancel a domain, you give up ownership of it, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to use it again somewhere else in future.
In this case your domain will only be released and become available again for registration once it has gone through the redemption process that lasts around 30 days.
However, we can still restore the domain to your WordPress.com account, and then you’ll de able to transfer the registration to the provider where you want to use it, without at any point losing ownership of the domain.
Please confirm if that’s the domain you’re trying to use, and if you want us to restore it to your account.
