  i already own a domain but I do not want to transfer it and my website be down. i would like to build my site and then ad my domain later, is that possible?

  Sure! You’re welcome to create your new site with us before pointing the domain here. That way your current site can stay “live” until your new one is ready.

  I do recommend getting a plan earlier on if you’ll need it, since they have other features you might find useful, including direct support:
  https://wordpress.com/plans

  Then just avoid using the domain options until you’re ready (choose one of the free names) and then you can map or transfer the domain.

  Also, when you do transfer the domain, it won’t automatically point to our name servers. You’ll need to initiate that switch.
