Domain

I have just decided change to World Press for my business website. I am hoping to design my new site in World Press whilst keeping my existing site live. Only making the World Press site live when I’m happy with it. How should I manage the transfer of my domain name. It is currently registered with my existing website provider.

    Hello there,

It’s good to know that you want to transfer your business website to the WordPress platform. Talking about WordPress, it’s equally important for you to know your options if you are not yet aware of them. There is the self-hosted version, whose software is available for free at WordPress.org, and then there is WordPress.com.
You can get to know more about the difference between them here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/.

In WordPress.com, you can design your new website and make it live whenever you are satisfied with it.

If you want to do a domain transfer into WordPress.com, here is a good place to start: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/.
It provides clear directions on how to manage the whole transfer process.

If you need more information and directions, please follow up with a reply.

    Hi

Thanks for your reply. Currently I’ve just registered with WordPress.com and plan to subscribe to the business plan as I really want the functionality of the shop offered. I have read the info about domain transfer/mapping, however I am concerned about keeping a live site at all times during the process. This is essential as my web sales are my main source of income.

When I registered with WordPress it immediately prompted me to create a site and choose what to do with my current domain map/transfer. I am worried that my current site will be affected if I start the domain transfer/mapping progress. I estimate it is going to take me several weeks to develop my new WordPress site (working around existing commitments). What do I do about the domain mapping/transfer if I need to keeping my current site live whilst building my WordPress site?

    Hope you can help?
    Thanks

  • Good morning –

This is a common question! My advice is to leave your domain sit on the current site for the time being. This will allow that site to remain alive and active. Get to work on building the new site + store. Once that new site is completely ready to go, then you can connect the domain to the new site. This will limit downtime as much as possible.

Once the business plan has been added to your account you’re going to have access to our live chat support team 24/7. Just use https://wordpress.com/help/contact/ anytime you have a question and someone will be there to help.

I’m happy to answer any questions you have about the differences between domain mapping and a domain transfer as well.
