  If you want to use a custom domain, it depends on whether or not you already own a domain. Additionally, to use a custom domain as your primary domain here at WordPress.com, you need one of our paid plans:

  https://wordpress.com/pricing/

  If you do not own a domain, you can follow the steps to register a new domain and map it to your site. Annual plans do have a credit to get your first year of your domain registration for free (renewals bill at full price).

  If you do own a domain already, purchase one of our paid plans and indicate in the domain process you already own a domain. You can read more about domain mapping here.
