  if i buy a domain name in wordpress, is it free to connect to a free wordpress website or do I need to buy a hosting plan before I can use that domain name I just bought in wordpress?

  You wouldn’t need to purchase hosting outside of WordPress.com, instead you would just need a paid plan: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
