    hello,
    I have to say that im very disappointed with how you failed to mention that purchasing a domain on a free plan is useless. I have already been going back and forth with domains because at first you didn’t support us using .co.za in domains so I had to ask for a refund from godaddy and now this. I don’t need the plan since I have already finished building my website on a free plan. for me to now pay for the plan for no reason other than to activate my domain is ridiculous. I would like some valid explanation to all this. I really don’t understand why I need to pay for all those things when I have already finished everything I need.

    I just purchased a domain today, getting so excited waiting for it to appear and then I find out that I can’t use it unless I pay more. how is that fair?

    Hey there,

    It seems that the WordPress.com policy is custom domains are available to use with the purchase of a plan (any plan that isn’t free). It would have been best to probably start with a plan that includes a free domain rather than buying the domain first. I think you just went about it backwards, which may be slightly more price-wise but for the value, robustness, security and services WordPress.com offers, you really can’t go wrong.

    I would see if you can cancel the domain purchase, but then go and purchase a plan instead, and use that domain there, since they’re free on an annual comittment. Or at least switch the domain over to the purchased hosting plan account.

    No I definitely don’t want to cancel the domain name I just purchased. But I do want to switch it over to a plan rather.

    Hi there @teganblom apologies for any confusion. For free sites on WordPress.com it’s not possible to set a custom address, so any custom domain you add to your account will redirect instead.

    We do find cases where folks are in the process of building their site (and intend to upgrade to a plan eventually) but want to purchase their domain early so they are locked in as the owner instead of risking it not being available later.

    The good new is that we are able to sort things out for you. Since you want a custom address we recommend our Personal Plan, which is our lowest cost option. This plan includes extra media storage, the ability to set a custom address for your site, and also turns off the ads we show on free sites to help cover our costs.

    A free domain is not included if you choose the monthly billing option, but is included in the yearly option. With this in mind I have added the plan to your cart here, and included a discount that includes the cost of your domain (-$19) so you do not pay the full cost of the plan
