  If I upgrade to a personal domain (dropping “wordpress”) will that eliminate the occasional advertisements that pop up or is that still an additional upgrade?

  Having a domain won’t remove ads. To support the service (and keep free features free), we do sometimes run advertisements. We try hard to make the ads discreet and effective and only run them in limited places. If you would like to completely eliminate ads from appearing on your blog, we offer the No-Ads Upgrade.

  You can go to Store > Domains on your blog’s dashboard and follow the steps there.
