Domain

Hello. My domain expired a few weeks ago, which I didn’t think would be a problem because I mapped it to Blue Host because I created a squarespace website and I didn’t realize the fact that my wordpress domain expired would affect my sq space acct. Either way i went to renew my domain today and there’s now an $80 fee associated with it. When will you release my domain so i can re-register under a differant, less expensive registrar.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
I am happy to disconnect your domain from your site. However, you should know that if I release your custom domain name, it could take several weeks for it to be released by our registrar for repurchase. There’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to register it elsewhere if someone else snatches it before you do. If that’s ok with you, I’ll go ahead and disconnect. I don’t want to do it without your approval as it’s not reversible.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much. -

Hi there. Unfortunately, the $80 fee is charged by the domain registry and is not one which we can waive. If you do not wish to pay the $80 fee you may let the domain expiration process continue and attempt to register the domain again at the regular price once it has expired completely.
As I mentioned earlier: Please note that someone else may purchase the domain first, in which case you will be unable to register it again, but if you prefer this option just let us know.

You domain (eriklevi.com) expired 17 days ago on June 6, 2014. For all the stats about your upgrades, you can take a look at your site’s Dashboard and click Store → My Upgrades.
Thanks much.

I’m confused because under the domain cancellation policy it talks about changing the name servers which I did a while ago. I mapped this to Blue Host back in April. I just want this cancelled so I can sign eriklevi.com back up under a different host.

Domain expiration is a pretty long process. It can typically take 60-90 days or so for a domain to work it’s way through the grace/redemption/etc periods. You can read more about that here:
The short version is that you domain may be released by the registrar and be available again to register elsewhere sometime between Aug 6 and Sept 6. But that is just a guess based on past experience. In addition, it is possible for your domain to never become available to register if somebody swipes it out from under you before it is released by the registrar.
If the domain is particularly important to you, I would suggest paying the $80 redemption fee to regain control of it. I agree that it is frustrating, but it is the fee allowed by ICANN and levied by every registrar that I am familiar with.
