Domain
-
Hi, I have a domain at another hosting site that I want to use for this .com blog I have. I did a little research through WP.com’s stuff and found that I just had to change the nameservers to ns1/ns2/ns3.wordpress.com and I did that. It has been well over 24 hours and it’s still not connected, so I was wondering if I’m not doing something right. They have no answers.
WP.com: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That would be the second step of the process. :)
Make sure you also follow the first step: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
Also, when a domain is registered or altered, there is a process called propagation, where information about the domain name is passed to internet service providers all over the world. This process can take up to 72 hours (though usually much less). During that time, your domain may go to its old location, and you may also receive a warning message in your browser about “redirect errors.”
If you have properly connected the domain and still have trouble viewing the site after 24 hours have passed, please try clearing your browser’s cache: https://www.refreshyourcache.com/
If that doesn’t work, try clearing your local DNS cache: https://www.whatsmydns.net/flush-dns.html

Yeah, I know all about propagation. That’s why I waited over 24 hours to see if it would change. BUT, I didn’t know about the first step. However, according to that page you linked to, it says to click “Add a domain to this site” and when I go to that page, that isn’t an option. I’ve also cleared my cache.

If you’re trying to add it under the site you listed, that will be at https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/aneurysmradio.wordpress.com
Click “Other domain options” near the top-right: https://d.pr/i/g3QMAT
-
Yeah, and that’s what I did. That’s how I know it’s not an option.
Options include:
“Add a domain to a NEW site”
“Add a domain to a DIFFERENT site”
“Add a domain WITHOUT a site”And all of them take me to buy a domain from WP.com.
-
Oof, yeah that’s on me. End of day Friday brain fog. It’s even in my screenshot.
I’m not sure why it isn’t working as it should, we’ll look into that, but for now at https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/aneurysmradio.wordpress.com click “Just search for a domain” and scroll to the bottom of the list of recommendations, where you’ll see “Already own a domain? You can use it as your site’s address.”
Keep in mind that if you only connect a domain this way, it will only redirect to https://aneurysmradio.wordpress.com/
You’ll need a paid plan to set it as the primary address: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#set-a-primary-address
So, you might want to just hit that blue “Upgrade to a plan” button instead.
-
It’s all good, I get it. I don’t know where you are, but here the sun sets at like noon now lol, feels like it anyway. Okay, so if I upgrade to a plan and do it that way, what’s the deal with my email that I use under that domain?
-
If you just changed the domain’s name servers, email under the domain is no longer operating.
DNS essentially tells the world how email under the domain operates, and the name servers tell the world where those DNS records are located.
With the domain now pointed here by name servers, your domain essentially has lost its prior DNS records (like those which controlled your email).
You’ll need to finish connecting the domain (either alone or via a plan) and then you’ll be able to configure its DNS over here.
Once that’s done, we have a few email provider recommendations: https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/
Or, you could configure DNS again so your old email provider is still used: https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/add-other-email/
-
I got a plan and connected the site. I’ll try to configure the DNS. If I run into issues, which I’m sure I will, I’ll let you know. Thank you so much for your help!!!

I’m having issues getting the email set up. I have the MX, but I can’t find where to do it. That page you sent me is telling me to do something that I can’t do.
-
Hi there,
Sounds like you might be clicking on the “add email” option which is a way to add email to domains that don’t already have it with another provider.
In this case it sounds like you would like to edit your DNS settings, which is where MX records are added. That can be found here: https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/aneurysmradio.com/dns/aneurysmradio.com
Also, since domain records is something that most people don’t go to college for, you can also just let us know here (in your forum reply) what settings you need to add and we’ll make sure they get added correctly.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for that info, but I don’t know where to add this MX stuff. I’m on that page, but it’s asking for DNS and when I entered what I thought I needed to into the thing it said it wasn’t valid.
This is what they sent me.

So I guess it needs to propagate too. I’m not sure what settings I would need for you to set for me, so if you could help me out with that, that would be cool.
-
Hi there,
It looks like your MX record is correctly set up based on what you provided above, so there’s nothing else you need to do on our end.
Once the records have finished propagating (which shouldn’t be more than a few hours), the email should start working, provided everything is good on your email provider’s end.
