Domain and hosting

What is the difference between transferring and mapping a domain name and because it is through godaddy and you have plans with them does that make a difference?

Hello!
You can read about domain transfers here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
Transfer the registration. Your domain registration and billing will be moved from your current domain provider to WordPress.com. That means in future you’ll manage all aspects of your domain here, including renewal, cancellation, or a future transfer.
Map the domain. Your domain registration will stay with your current provider, and you’ll point the domain to WordPress.com instead. Use this if your domain is less than 60 days old, or you have a domain extension that cannot be transferred to WordPress.com. The domain will show your WordPress.com site, and depending on how you point it here you’ll be able to set up email and manage your DNS via our domain manager, but you’ll still need to pay your current provider for the domain’s renewal every year.
You can read about domain mapping here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Essentially, if you transfer your domain to WordPress.com, WordPress.com manages your domain for you, and in the future, you’ll pay for your domain and manage it through WordPress.com. If you map your domain to WordPress.com, your domain registrar (where you purchased your domain, e.g. GoDaddy) manages your domain, and you’ll pay for it and manage it through them. Both will point your domain to your WordPress.com site.
Both options require an upgraded WordPress.com plan.
GoDaddy offers managed WordPress.org hosting. This differs and is separate from WordPress.com hosting; you can compare the two here: WordPress.com and WordPress.org
When you purchase managed WordPress hosting through GoDaddy, you’re simply buying a shared hosting plan, and GoDaddy installs the self-hosted version of WordPress for you.
If you’ve already purchased a managed WordPress plan through GoDaddy, and you’d like to transfer your existing site to WordPress.com, you can find instructions to do so here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/
Hope this helps! 🙂
