Domain and switching

I have read through the domain mapping threads. So to be clear… if I have 3-4 domains through WordPress, I can only use one of those domains for one blog, correct? Would the other domains be stored somewhere withing WordPress or are they stored on my blog dashboard? If I decide later that one of the other domains that I have would be more effective, how easy or difficult is it to switch to the other domain? Is that a wise thing to do? Sometimes one does not know how their blog will evolve, and it might be better to switch domains at another point of time. What is your experience with this and switching, if you could please. Thank you so much!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you already have a website up at your domain, you can also map your blog to a subdomain of that site. … You can map as many domains as you want to one blog, each Domain Mapping Upgrade can be used with one domain only. You can’t switch to a different domain later during the upgrade period. To map a different domain, you can purchase another upgrade.

Also, please note that WordPress.com automatically removes the “www” from all URLs. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

I don’t already have a website nor do I have a domain, yet. Okay, I understand that you have to pay for each domain to map to one blog, but if I want to switch to a different domain from another domain, then how much time is “during the upgrade period?”
And I noticed in the forum that some people really wanted “www” in their URL. Why all the fuss about that?

Switching the domain name (URL) is bad for traffic and identification, even with some of the tools available here, if you start with my-site.wordpress.com then if you do a Domain Mapping upgrade the switch will be automatic if you went to my-site.com.

The cost of your own Domain Name and the mapping is minimal ( $ 17–US / year) that if you think your project will take off and go – get the domain now and make it easy for everyone, less confusion and looks neater.

You pay annually for one blog (1) a domain name and if you do not renew it and it expires then someone else can purchase it, so you renew it annually if you truly want to keep it.
You pay annually for one blog (2) domain mapping and if you do not renew it and it expires and that means every URL “breaks” and reverts to the root blog wordpress.com sub-domain URL. Every domain URL will then produce a “404” page not found when clicked.

“You can’t switch to a different domain later during the upgrade period”.

then how much time is “during the upgrade period?”

It’s the period of time you pay for the domain mapping to be in effect ie. 1 year, and it’s annually renewable.

Do you understand what domain mapping does? We pay for domain mapping so that none of the links are “broken” and all of our visitors who click the URLs for the wordpress.com root blog are seamlessly and immediately redirected to the domain URLs. Without domain mapping every root blog link clicked will produce a “404” (page not found) as I stated above.

If what you are asking is how long does it take for a domain name change to propagate throughout the internet after I purchase a domain name and domain mapping — the answer is usually less than 24 hours, but sometimes it takes 24 – 72 hours for the process to be completed.

On the “www” issue all I can say is “www” means world wide web and in the beginning of the web it was commonly used in URLs. Now – not so much. No wordpress.com blogs have “www” in their URLs. I have no idea why some people prefer “www”.
