Domain and themes

  Hi

  I’ve recently started with WordPress (It’s still just a standard template at the moment) and am having trouble understanding what I need to do to actually have a site. I’m confused about domains mostly, I registered one with WP itself, but when looking for themes to use, such as through ithemes.com, they were talking about registering with places like godaddy and stuff about having a Linux server. It’s all terribly confusing. I was looking for something simple to tell people about my travel business. I realise there’s a learning curve with the system, but this is very complicated.

  I thought with wordpress that I can just buy a theme and update the site as I need, without having to spend more money on hosting and all those other things. More simply, do I need anything else for people to see my site?

  Oh, just an extra thing, I have a paid account with WordPress, one of the yearly ones. If that matters.

  Start looking for themes at the wordpress.com themes pages. Outside themes may be usable (never tried that or seen anyone mention it … though I bet timethief will know) or maybe not.

  Select a free theme and just try it out. You can switch themes any time and your content will remain, just restyled by a different theme. Once you are comfortable with how things change with themes, you might be interested in one of the cool paid themes that people spend weeks designing.

  OUTSIDE THEMES CAN NOT EVER BE USED ON A WORDPRESS.COM BLOG NO MATTER WHAT UPGRADES YOU HAVE.

  Sorry to shout, but after something like five people making this mistake today, I’ve become a little testy about it.

  The only themes you can use at WordPress.COM are the ones you see in your Dashboard >> Appearance >> Themes.

  The themes you see on the rest of the internet are for WordPress.ORG installs on your own host. There is no upgrade that will allow you to use a theme from the wild here. If you don’t see the theme listed in your Dashboard you can’t use it.

  Thank you everyone for your help. I see that’s the mistake I was making, I was looking at wordpress.org themes.
