Domain and Upgrade

  I currently have a basic free plan, with a domain name bought from WordPress.com

  I would like to upgrade to a Premium plan. It says that with the free Premium plan I get a free domain for one year. Does that mean the next time my domain renews (in January), then I will not have to pay? Or is that only for new domains?
