Domain and Website creation

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear Sir/Madame,

We currently own the following website: http://www.maltacommand.com/ for which we pay a yearly fee to maintain the domain and also another fee of the Host (every three years); we are interested in using WordPress in order to provide a facelift to our website and use your tools/templates in order to build a new website. As a result of the latter I have some technical queries which I need to ask you since I’m an amateur in this field:

    1) How does the process of Domain transfer exactly work and also once we transfer the domain to you will the old website (linked above) be available to view (in order to use it to transfer the data and also to use it as a reference, to build the new WordPress website).

    2) If let’s say we decide to close the above website and not transfer the domain and we start from scratch by creating an account with WordPress and start constructing the website. How one will go about creating a domain uniquely for us Malta Command group and also what will be the fees incurred ? will these be in the form of the yearly subscriptions only or are their any other fees involved ?

I appreciate your help and time on the above, will await your detailed reply and will look forward to use your website builder services if we decide to move forward with you.

    Thanks and Regards
    Kurt Degabriele

    Hello Kurt,

We are happy to see you there!

I will provide replies below, under each question.
But before we begin, let me remind about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

    1) How does the process of Domain transfer exactly work

There are two options to use a new website under an existing domain:
    1) Domain Mapping, when you continue to pay for domain to the current registrar ENOM, INC., but link all the visitors to a new WordPress.com website.
    2) Domain transfer, that means to change the registrar of your domain from current registrar to WordPress.com. More info about domains on WordPress.com is here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/ . This way you will pay for domain and (if necessary) for WordPress.com paid Plan from one account.

also once we transfer the domain to you will the old website (linked above) be available to view (in order to use it to transfer the data and also to use it as a reference, to build the new WordPress website).

Your old website will remain untouched where it is now (on OVH SAS), but once you transfer the domain to another website, your old website will be still accessible under IP, something like this: http://66.70.178.185/. Also all the files will be still accessible as they are now, domain transfer or mapping does not affect the place where the website “lives”.
Here is more info about website transfer: https://wordpress.com/support/moving-a-blog/

How one will go about creating a domain uniquely for us Malta Command group and also what will be the fees incurred ?

You can choose a new domain you like but it can not be same as any existing domain. That is the idea of new domain isnt it? All the domain fees are mentioned here and please note first year is free of charge!!!

will these be in the form of the yearly subscriptions only or are their any other fees involved ?

Domain fee is usually a yearly fee.
WordPress paid Plans if necessary can be purchased separately under a yearly fee or monthly fee. Plans are necessary to reveal more power of WordPress.com.

Please revert if that helped? I value your feedback, so let me know what you think!

  • Hi @kurtdegs – I wanted to draw out a point you made and speak to that specifically.

we are interested in using WordPress in order to provide a facelift to our website and use your tools/templates in order to build a new website.

If you are interested in using WordPress.com as your potential host for a WordPress-powered facelift to your existing site, we always recommend starting a free site and taking that for a spin.

If you found that you understood the environment and enjoyed the level of support you received, we would then recommend that you proceed with building the entire site here in the background (while your current site continues to be served on the web). Once you completed building the site here, you could then transfer your domain here to your WordPress.com account and connect it to the site you created. That would effectively “launch” the new site on your current domain. I’m oversimplifying a touch, but that’s effectively what’s involved.

Looking at this from another angle: are you interested in saving some time and having us build your site for you? We offer a wonderful in-house service and we’re happy to connect you with that team. Let us know.

If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Dear Both, Thanks for our replies!

Apologies for my late reply but was engaged with other stuff. I will be going through the information and if I find any queries I will let you know and post more questions here :)

    Good day and take care

    Dear Both,

I’ve gone through the info that you sent me and also I consider your point quite valid and ideal deancroyal ;)

With regards to the fees I have some points to clarify:

If we transfer the domain from our current one, to wordpress.com the cost will be 18dollars. Choosing the Premium plan to create/maintain the website for 8Euros /month – which will also grant us a free domain for one year; however what I couldn’t understand is, how much will the domain continue to cost yearly (after the free year expires) or is this part of the premium fee ?

The price for buying a new domain (if it will be case the we totally close the current website) and buy a new one from you/plus build the website from start; would it be: the Premium plan of 8E/month only or will it include a separate fee for buying the domain (and then a yearly fee to maintain the domain) ?

Sorry if I’m asking many repeatable questions, but I need to fully understand this, in order to move forward
    Thanks for your time!

We are happy to help you @kurtdegs!

Payment for domain will be same if you transfer an existing domain or register a new one. That means 18 EUR per year will be an annual domain registration fee, each year. That fee is to keep the domain alive.

But if you purchase a paid plan then first year domain registration is for free. Same applies for your transferred domain – it will be registered via WordPress.com for the first year for free.

Paid plans do not include domain registration fee. Paid plans fees are for software maintenance, hosting services, support etc. F.e. first year you will have to pay: Personal plan cost 8Eur/month + 0 EUR domain registration fee. Second year: Personal plan cost 8Eur/month + 18 EUR domain registration fee.

If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
We look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi again @kurtdegs,

You have mentioned that Premium plan would be workable for you, but could you please tell us more about your website vision, then we could recommend you one or another plan according to the features needed?
Anyway, as @deancroyal has mentioned, we recommend to start from a free plan to “warm up”.

We look forward to hearing from you.

    Dear maksimurasov,

Our aim is to improve aesthetics of the website and give it more modern features to it which allow to move forward with our hobby (historical re-enactment) via the virtual world. Primarily our aim is to keep/build the website as an educational platform providing historical info to visitors and also informing of events we participated in.

Many thanks for your assistance !

    Regards
    Kurt

  • Hi there,

Just to clarify a few things here:

first year you will have to pay: Personal plan cost 8Eur/month + 0 EUR domain registration fee. Second year: Personal plan cost 8Eur/month + 18 EUR domain registration fee.

The domain is free with any paid plan purchased on annual billing. If you do not register any new custom domain, you can transfer over your domain for free.
The domain mapping is free with any paid plan always.

The price of the domain after the first year will depend on its TLD (extension), and you can find a full price list here.

As for the plan, it sounds like you should be fine to start off with Premium. You can always upgrade later on if needed :).

    Hi @kurtdegs,

Thank you for the update, I see the main goal is to improve the look of the website and to post articles as well as event information. I have to say WordPress is well suitable for that!
Have you already started a free website here on WordPress.com?

Here are few tips to start:
    https://wordpress.com/support/start/

In the beginning it may seem that in the Dashboard there are too many buttons, menus, that there are too many places to apply changes to the website. Well, the website is in 3D, it has many sides to look at. I will give a little summary of the main things I personally had to find out before creating something that I really wanted.
The first thing for me was to understand what is what, f.e. that Theme is something that controls the overall look of whole website(all pages), and can be enhanced by customization. Then smaller parts that hang all over the website like footer, side menu can be improved by widgets. Then go deeper, individual Posts and Pages can be created and customized in Block Editor.
There are also Plugins (available only onBusiness or eCommerce plans), that are like additional programs to increase the functionality of the website. And Jetpack, one of the silent engines which increases security, speed, traffic of WordPress.com sites- you will use it and do not even notice that.

There is a huge amount of information behind these links, so please do not hesitate to ask, we are here to help!

Thank you all for the detailed information and support; I have not yet created a webpage for now as we’re in the process of discussing the way forward with the current website.

Will definitely ask if help is required :)

    Good day

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi all,

This is to once again thank you for your support; after some internal group talks we decided to go ahead with word press and start building a free website for now since as I already mentioned we already have another website running with a domain to which we are paying for.

I would like to ask if I can access templates or themes which are premade to load them into the WordPress website builder so that I can work on that chosen template ?

    Thanks for your time
    Kurt

Templates you are referring to are called Themes here is WordPress.
And yes, even under a free plan you will have available free Themes to install to you website.
They all are available here: https://wordpress.com/themes/free.
Here is a manual how to activate Theme: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/
And another article that might be useful for customizing: https://wordpress.com/support/customize/

Hope that helps, feel free to ask if any!

    Hi all,

Just a small update; we just contacted our host and domain service provider and they can install wordpress.org for us, so we can use it to re-vamp our website. So we’ll be using wordpress.org not .com ✌….can you offer some tips or advice we may need to know or ask our host/domain service provider?

Thanks for your time and regards
    Kurt

We can only help with and advise with sites hosted here at WordPress.com. However, you can reach out to the WordPress community for guidance:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting

You’ll need a WordPress.org user account to comment on those forums, so if you don’t already have one, you can sign up for a new one here:

    https://login.wordpress.org/register?locale=en_US

    I hope that helps!
