  Hello. I am trying to find the owner of the domain, but when i go to it it redirects me to https://en.wordpress.com/typo/?subdomain=slate-realestate. Does this mean WordPress owns it? If so, why when I try to register the domain using WordPress is it unavailable?

  I think your question is for slate-realestate.com. If so, then no WordPress.com is not the registrar. Someone owns the domain name outside of WordPress.com. They registered it at Squarespace and pointed the name servers to WordPress.com.

  WordPress.com doesn’t have any power over that domain, sorry!
