Domain Availability After Refund

  • Unknown's avatar

I purchased a domain as part of a $99 wordpress.com premium package and then got it refunded. Now when I log in to wordpress.com, the domain no longer shows up as one that I own. When I check the availability of that particular domain on other domain registry sites, they tell me that it us unavailable. How long will the domain remain unavailable and how can regain access to this domain?

flagged for the staff – they might be able to retrieve the domain name for you and charge you for only the registration and domain mapping – it can take a few days to a couple of weeks for a domain that is canceled at once to be released – but the registrar is not required to release a domain name

  • I can try and reverse the cancellation. I will let you know if I am successful, it typically takes 12-48 hours.

If successful, you will need to re-purchase the yearly domain registration. Then you will be able to use the domain here on WordPress.com or point your domain to a new webhost using these instructions:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

Registrars hold onto domain names for some amount of time, typically a couple of weeks, in cases like this (quick registration and then cancellation) in order to try and combat fraud. In theory, the registrar should release it and allow it to be registered again. But there is no guarantee that this will happen.

Please let me know what you would like me to do.

I don’t necessarily want to reverse the cancelation. I quickly realized that I was getting myself into a longer process with wordpress.com than I wanted to at this point, and that’s why I requested the refund. My web needs are not too demanding at the moment, but may be in the future, but not for some time. What would be ideal for me is to have the domain released so I can reregister it through another vendor for now so I can use those service short term while I develop a longer term, more powerful site for the future and then map that domain to wordpress at that point.

  • I can try to get the registrar to release the domain, but there is no guarantee of success. It is typically easier to get them to reverse the cancellation.

Don’t forget that even if registered here, you can use your domain with any other webhost you like by following these instructions:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

And after 60 days have passed (ICANN rules) you can transfer your domain to another registrar if you wish using these instructions:

Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

Finally, while WordPress.com can be fairly complex if you want it to be, I think many folks would say that it is also one of the easiest ways to get started with a website. Have you see this tutorial:

    Homepage

In any case, just let me know what you’d like me to do, I just want to help you get whatever result you are looking for.

I understand that WordPress.com can be simple or complex, but either way there is definitely a learning curve to it. What I’d like to do is have something simple and fantastic up right away that can run while I’m learning WordPress in my limited free time, then transfer it to a stunning WordPress site that I’ve spent some time on and have just how I want it. At this point, I’ve already accomplished the former with another service, I’m just lacking the unique domain name I want to use—which, frustratingly, is unavailable only because I’ve already purchased it but can’t really use it right now. If you can help me accomplish all that, that’s really what I’m after here. Preferably without the two-month wait. I’m feeling like I really shot myself in the foot there.

  • Please keep in mind that the 60 day wait is ONLY to transfer the domain to another registrar.

You can have a domain registered here and use it at any other domain registrar with the instructions I posted above.

Yes, thanks for reminding me of that. Please let me know as soon as you can whether the domain will be released or the cancelation reversed.

    Thanks.

  • I have contacted the registrar and will let you know as soon as I hear back.

  • Reversing the cancellation was successful.

I have sent you an email to the address associated with your WordPress.com account. Please let me know if you did not receive it.

Email received; I’ll go process the payment right away. Thank you for your help.

  • You should be able to see the domain back in your account now. Let me know if you have any trouble.
