domain being used on current website, but want to build on WordPress
-
I currently have my domain being used on a Squarespace website I have up.
I’d like to work on building my new site on WordPress while the current one is still up. Is that possible? It seems as though I have to transfer the domain before even beginning the new design on WordPress. Please advise.
Thank you!

Hi sheilasanjuan –
Thanks for getting in touch. This is a great question.
You can get started with a free site on WordPress.com and then connect the domain once you’re ready to go.
In order to connect the domain you’ll need an upgraded plan. Those are at https://wordpress.com/plans/ And there’s 2 different options for connecting that domain.
1. map it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
2. transfer it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/Write back with any other questions – happy to help :)

Hi Liz,
Thanks so much for the quick response!
So my domain would basically have the “.wordpress” suffix at the end while I’m designing on a free plan. And when I switch to a paid plan, it’ll switch over seamlessly to my original domain name (of course, after I transfer).

Mostly correct! Basically you’ll set up the site as you like it, then connect the domain to it.
Since the paid plans can come with extra space and features, it’s OK to go ahead and sign up for the plan before switching the domain over. For example, the Premium plan gives you access to several Premium themes that you might like to use as you set up your site. Plus you’ll get direct support and what not.
But you could just leave the free domain as it is until you’re ready to go live.
Want to give that a go?
