Domain cancellation

  Hi, I registered a domain for free when I upgraded my plan. However, a few hours later I deactivated the premium plan and the domain so I could host it elsewhere. However, my new hosting service says that domain is unavailable, but it is not currently showing in my account. When I go to the URL it says ‘Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Please log in and go to the Domains Upgrades page of your blog to use this domain.’

  The domain hasn’t been bought by anyone else. What can I do to use it again?

  I think my best option is to renew the domain, but I don’t see any option to do so in the wordpress dashboard.

  Hi there,

  Cancelled domains are not released immediately, and it can take anything from a few days to over a year before a cancelled domain becomes available again, if at all. You should never cancel a domain that you still want to use, as there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to use it again somewhere else in future. Only cancel a domain if you’re completely sure you no longer want it at all.

  In this case your domain should become available again by early next week, so the simplest option would be to just wait a few days, and then you’ll be able to register it directly with your new host.

  I can also still restore it to your account, but as you’ve already been refunded we’ll need to send you a link to pay for it again, and it will be 60 days before you’ll be able to transfer it out to a different registrar. You will be able to point it to your new host in that time, but the registration will have to remain with us.

  If you want to transfer the domain you need to wait for 60 days. This 60-day lock is required by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and cannot be waived.

  In the meantime, you can point your domain to your hosting provider by following these instructions:
