Domain Cancellation advice – WordPress/Automattic $15 domain hosting.
-
Hello,
I recently purchased the $15 Automattic domain option through WordPress.com / Options / Domains, and later found out that it is not quite what I am after.
What I would like to do, is to cancel this account (obviously losing my $15, but that’s not a worry) so that my domain is available once again (alyndabear.com) and then host/register that domain again but externally, through the preferred WordPress.ORG sites.
I’ve pored over the WordPress/Automattic FAQs, and found the link for the cancellation of the account, this is what was said:
“Canceling a domain does not entitle you to a refund of any part of your registration fee. Once you have canceled a domain it is no longer registered to you. It will be listed as available for others to register. This is a permanent action. You may re-register this domain at a later time and for additional registration fees.”
It also gives you instructions to do so – which I have been following, however I am not provided with a “CANCEL” option anywhere for my domain name.
Just wondering if anyone has any advice for this service, as I would like to cancel the domain and re-sign up elsewhere as soon as possible. Cheers for any advice.

I’ve just been doing some extra reading through the forums – and just need some clarification — do I not have to CANCEL the domain, so to speak, before I register with an external host through WordPress.org? (As in, do I go ahead and register with one of these places, and then fix up the mapping?)
Or is best to cancel my Automattic membership completely and then go about registering elsewhere? Again, thanks for bearing with me on this one.

You can change the DNS settings in the control panel any time to point at another host.
We stay as the registrar. After 60 days you can move the domain to another registrar. We then have nothing to do with the domain.
Nothing gets cancelled, just moved around.
The 60 days is set by ICANN, not us.

I purchased the points and just updated the nameservers within Godaddy. I’m assuming that if I were to move my website elsewhere, I would just sign up (duh) and then update the nameservers again.
