Domain Cancellation Issues

  • Unknown's avatar

I canceled and deleted my domain name on WordPress within 48 hours so I could sign up for WordPress through Bluehost since I needed a host anyhow. I thought my domain name would no longer be registered with WordPress since I canceled it so quickly. Is there a way to get them to take it our of their registry so I can get it back using WordPress through Bluehost? I called WordPress today and they said they would look into it and call me back in 30 to 60 minutes, but I never heard back. I have sent two messages and still have heard nothing. How can I get help with this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The site I need help with is not empathylinkcom.wordpress.com. The domain name I need help with is creeksideconfessions.com.

  • Hi there,

Cancelled domains are not released immediately, and it can take anything from a few days to over a year before a cancelled domain becomes available again, if at all. You should never cancel a domain that you still want to use, as there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to use it again somewhere else in future. The better option here would have been to not cancel the domain, and then point it to Bluehost until it became eligible for transfer.

In this case we are still able to restore your domain. That will also require undeleting the site for which you originally bought it. Once restored, you’ll be able to point it to Bluehost’s servers, and after you’ve owned it for at least 60 days you’ll be able to transfer it away from us.

But as you cancelled it within 24 hours of registering it, the domain should also be released within another day or two, at which point you should be able to register it directly with Bluehost, so it might be simpler to just wait a bit in this case.

Please let us know which option you prefer. If you decide to wait, we can refund the $18 domain cost, which I see wasn’t refunded automatically when you cancelled the domain.

I called WordPress today and they said they would look into it and call me back in 30 to 60 minutes, but I never heard back.

I don’t know who you called, but it wasn’t us, as we don’t provide phone support and don’t have a phone number to call to get support.

  • Just noting here the issue has been resolved through email already.

I am so happy to hear I can get my domain name back. I am new at all of this and have learned a lot from some of my epic mistakes. Of course, I would like to do whatever it takes to get my domain name back, everything I have done is built on it. I want to do whatever it takes to get it back in the easiest and most cost-effective way possible. If I can get it back without having to pay a fee to transfer it to Bluehost where I will still use WordPress that would be best financially. In this case, I would like the $18.00 refund. But, if I need to recover it on WordPress and then have it directed to Bluehost, then I will do that too. At this point, I want to do whatever it takes to get it back. I so very much appreciate your reply and advice.

On a side note, I called [removed] as it is listed as a WordPress customer service phone number. They are telling me they are 3rd party company that provides WP support services.

    Thanks,
    Lori

Do you still need assistance as @ivanottinger indicated that this matter had been resolved yesterday.
Note that “third party” support can’t refund you or help with domain issues (and probably charged you for an expensive phonecall).

  • I called [removed] as it is listed as a WordPress customer service phone number.

We do not offer phone support, nor do we have any affiliation with any third-party company that does so.

Yes, I still need assistance! I have not received a refund for my domain, nor has my domain been released. It was stated that @ivanottinger indicated that this matter had been resolved, but in fact, it has not been resolved. I did receive an email that stated I was told I would get a refund and my domain would be available in a day or two given I had purchased it and canceled it within 2 days’ time. Can someone please help me get this resolved?

  • Refunds take about ten days to reach your account. If there’s a delay then the best thing to do is check in with the bank directly. They’re the only ones who can inform you on their own processing times and when the money will be released from them and in to your personal account.

The domain takes 5 days to get released.

  • Hello Lori,

as I stated in the email I sent you last Wednesday, we restored the domain to your WordPress.com account to make sure you will get the domain back.

I have also sent you instructions on how to proceed with pointing your domain to Bluehost and then transferring it to them completely.

Please reply to the email if something isn’t clear. We will be happy to help.

I just signed into wordpress.com. When the first email was sent I replied and asked for a refund per your question what would you prefer as stated in the email you sent below. I am being scammed and this is not okay. I am pasting the entire email thread from ivanottingers emails below. He asked if I wanted a refund or if I wanted my site restored. I commented I wanted a refund and my domain released he stated it would only take a day or so. It’s been 6 or 7 days now. This is not okay. It also stated I should reply by email. I did this and the email was returned stating it was not deliverable. Now I get an email stating my site has been restored and I will need to point my domain to my host when I specifically stated I preferred to have it released and wanted a refund. I logged onto WP.com and my site has not been restored and I do not have a domain name.

    This is the email thread:

    Hello Lori,

    thanks for your message.

No worries! Domains can be confusing.

I went ahead and first restored your site (which was necessary) and then I also restored your custom domain creeksideconfessions.com.

The expiration date of your domain is September 21, 2020 (next year).

To point your domain to Bluehost you can follow these steps:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/change-name-servers/#changing-name-servers-to-point-away-from-wordpress-com
Then, after 60 days from the date of the domain registration, you will be able to transfer the domain to Bluehost completely by following steps below:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/
We don’t charge anything for the domain transfers, but Bluehost might – so it is better to check with them.

Once the transfer is finished, you can then delete your WordPress.com site or also close your account completely as it is described over here:

    Site deletion: https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/
    Account closure: https://en.support.wordpress.com/close-account/
Please let us know if this helped or if you have any questions. We will be happy to help you.

And good luck with your site! :)

    Cheers.
