Domain Cancellation/Transfer

  Hello, I wanted to find out if it is possible to pay for a custom domain name only (through WordPress). I no longer use WordPress for site hosting, just the domain name. Would we have to cancel the domain, wait 60 days and register with another registrar like Godaddy to do this? Is there a high probability that we will get the domain after cancelling? Whats the best option?
