domain change

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello! So I had attempted to create this website previously but it turned into a HUGE mess, to the point where it was easier to just delete it and start over. But I think I may have tried starting over too soon because wordpress thought the domain I chose already existed somewhere else so they gave me this big ugly number to differentiate it. But that domain was my domain to begin with and I’d be perfectly happy just using dbh4queen.wordpress.com so I was wondering if you could help me make my domain that again? Preferably without having to pay.
    Thank you in advance <3

    Hello there,

As far as I can tell, dbh4queen.wordpress.com is no longer available as it has been deleted, and deleting a site permanently deletes it and it cannot be re-added.
    https://wordpress.com/support/delete-site

However you can create new free site here : https://wordpress.com/start/free/?ref=pricing-lp

    Hope this helps! :)

  • @amiteshg93, staff can help people un-delete an address if it was deleted within the last 30 days. Just add modlook for us.

    @dbhforqueen
I was able to restore the site for you. Regarding starting over, did you need to remove your content, or changes to the template? We can help you get it sorted.

I don’t want the old website restored. I just want to use the same domain as the old one on my new one. If you can somehow delete the content on the old website and transfer the content of the new one to it, that would work too. Whatever it takes for the new website to have the same domain as the old website, that’s what I want to do.

  • Hi, the only way to get the old address back is to restore it, so that part is done.

If you want to move the content from the new site with the bad address into the old one, you can export and import your content:
    https://wordpress.com/support/export/
    https://wordpress.com/support/import/

Or if you want to clear the site completely first, you can do that by resetting any changes you made to the templates and template parts, then deleting your pages and posts:
    https://dbh4queen.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=gutenberg-edit-site&postType=wp_template
    https://wordpress.com/posts
    https://wordpress.com/pages

Let us know if you need more help with this.

This was mostly helpful, thank you. It looks like I’ll need the business plan to actually get the plug-in though and I’m pretty broke right now so I’m thinking I’ll just wait until I’m less broke.
Do you know if I’d be allowed to downgrade back to my free account once I transfer the website? And would the business plan cover all the my sites or just one of them? like, do I have to get 2 business plans to cover the sites I’m trying import/export?

  • Unknown's avatar

You don’t need to use a plugin to move your content. You just need to export from the new site to the old site by following the steps here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/export/
    https://wordpress.com/support/import/

Ok! I think I figured out what you mean, thank you (and sorry, I have adhd so my eyes just kinda bounce around looking for the relevant information)
so I *think* I imported my new site onto the old site successfully but now the problem I’m having is that even though I permanently deleted the old homepage and replaced it with the new one, it’s still showing the old homepage whenever I go to view the site. So did I miss something or is this just a “wait for the wordpress servers to catch up and acknowledge the change” kind of thing?

  • Hi there,

To be sure I understand, you are trying to have https://dbh4queen.wordpress.com/ show the same homepage content as I see when I visit https://dbh4queen94704826.wordpress.com/ yes?

I’m not sure what is different between those two so can you point it out in case I’m looking in the wrong place?

    Thanks for the additional info!

besides the numbered one looking a bit cleaner, the new one also has the correct links to the correct and current pages. When I try to look at the links on the old homepage, it takes me to some deleted pages on the old website (so an error message page) or asks me to sign in to my account. But it only does it when I view it logged off my wordpress (so how other people would see it) but it looks completely correct and how I want it to look when I look at it through my wordpress account. It’s very weird and frustrating. The site’s public so I’m not sure what’s going on there.

  • Hi again,

besides the numbered one looking a bit cleaner, the new one also has the correct links to the correct and current pages.

When you import/export content it does not transport the design over, so to get the same look you will want to activate this theme on your dbh4queen.wordpress.com site: https://wordpress.com/theme/livro/dbh4queen.wordpress.com

This is the theme that is in use on dbh4queen94704826.wordpress.com so by switching you should get the same look on both sites. Also it can sometimes be the case that switching to the same theme will address other issues (such as the menus) so please try switching your theme first, and then if that issue continues please let us know.

    hi :)
Honestly, I can live with the themes being different because I can always go back and edit it. My main problem is that when I’m looking at the site on my account, everything looks correct. It looks like the new website transferred completely- including the homepage. But when I log off my account and try to view the website as an outsider, it looks like the old website except now none of the links work because I had them deleted. But going back on my account, I can’t even find the pages that are showing on the public view because I deleted them! It feels like a bug, honestly, and I’m not sure how to fix it because, again, looking at it from my account, everything looks fine and how it should be, links work, etc. But for whatever reason, someone looking at the site from outside of wordpress (as I intend them to) seems to be getting a completely different site than the one I’m seeing on my account. Does that make sense?

  • Specifically these links don’t work, but everything else about the homepage on https://dbh4queen.wordpress.com/ is fine?

    – Issues from Z-A
    – [Semi] Trustworthy People
    – V/ The What and Why V/

If so I think I see the issue. It appears that for those links you have added the URL to the page editor view of each of those, something only an admin to the site can see. For example, the link “Issues from Z-A” is connected to this URL: https://wordpress.com/post/dbh4queen.wordpress.com/25

You can open that link, but I can’t, and neither can visitors to your site.

Instead the proper URL to link that to would be this page, which anyone can see: https://dbh4queen.wordpress.com/home-2/america-sucks-in-case-you-havent-noticed/

To fix that https://dbh4queen.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=gutenberg-edit-site&postType=page&postId=45 and then follow the steps in this video (click the link to see it) which will show you how it’s done: https://d.pr/v/ZFSQHm

To explain what you are seeing in the video, I am deleting the link that is already set for that text, and instead in the empty box I type in words from the title of the page I want to link to. In this case I started typing the word “Issues” and in the search results you see a list of pages that match that search.

From there you can click on the one you want the text to link to and it will be added correctly.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

But why is the homepage listed in the pages section different from the homepage when I visit the actual site?

  • The issue is that you appear to have edited the “page template” for your homepage. Normally it will show the content you have entered here in the page you have titled as “home”

Instead, by editing the template itself, it shows the text you entered in the template, which blocks the normal text from being shown.

To resolve this, please go to your template list here and click on the option to reset the “Header and Footer” template. Here is a screenshot to show you where to reset this template:

This will reset the template (and remove the text that is taking over your homepage now) and instead show the contents you are looking for instead.

Let us know if you need further assistance or if you have any questions.

OK I did what you said and I think that FINALLY fixed it. The site is now without flaws (minus a few stylistic things I’ll need to tighten up)
Thank you so much for everyone’s help. I’m a little annoyed it was something that just required like, 3 clicks, and I feel like templates are unnecessary and redundant and confusing (feel free to pass that along to the higher ups if you can) BUT you guys have been VERY patient and kind and responsive and I DEFINITELY would’ve given up a while ago if not for you guys’ helpful and consistent advice. Thank you so much- y’all deserve raises <3

  • Unknown's avatar

But just to double check, I’ll likely be deleting the https://dbh4queen94704826.wordpress.com/ website now that the cleaner domain’s website’s been cleaned up. That’s not going to mess anything up, is it?

  • No you should be fine to delete that now that you have moved your content over to dbh4queen.wordpress.com.

Also it is worth noting that you have 30 days to reverse your decision, so if you delete dbh4queen94704826.wordpress.com you would still have some time to get it back if need be.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
