Domain change and content
-
Hi all.
I’m looking to upgrade my .wordpress domain to only joannaaislinn.com.
Will that automatically show on my existing blog with all it’s content? Or will I have to do something to complete the change?
Thanks!
JoannaThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Also, will I still be able to change up my free themes once I purchase a domain upgrade?
Thanks again!

The existing blog doesn’t change. Getting a custom domain doesn’t change the blog; it only adds another web address.
Think of it like putting another door on an existing house. The house does not change.

Thnx, Raincoaster!
If I read correctly elsewhere, I would set that custom domain as my primary web address?

The name servers need to be changed at the Registrar
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Non-WordPress.com Nameservers
Although joannaaislinn.com has been registered, it is not using WordPress.com nameservers. If your domain is mapped to a self-hosted site, then your configuration may be fine as currently set up. If you wish to host your site at WordPress.com, you will need to update your nameservers as outlined below.
To learn about how to correctly map an existing domain, please see our documentation. If you’re not sure whether you own this domain or not, the WHOIS database record may help you out.

Thnx, Captn M, for your help and your time.
Your question is fair and appropriate.
I DID own it, until I started getting emails from a registry associated with Yahoo Small Business services stating that it would expire. (I didn’t recognize the charge on my credit card. When I called the CC company, the rep wasn’t allowed to tell me what she saw at her end so I told her to cancel it.)
I tried dealing with Yahoo to retrieve it, but the process was VERY user-UNfriendly. Their software kept reverting to the same pages where I could do nothing. Emails and phone conversations didn’t help.
I have a feeling my domain is no longer mine. I checked a/the (?) WHOIS page. Far as I can tell, my domain is connected to a ‘registered and active website.’ (It’s Japanese) :(

Sounds like someone has registered your old name joannaaislinn.com – in that case the domain mapping you just bought is wasted money – and you might as well get a refund on the domain mapping (Dashboard >> Store >> My Upgrades >> Cancel )
and someone else having /joannaaislinn.com is the reason setting that domain name to Primary sends things to the Japanese site – if the new owner is legit then you are out of luck – if it is a squatter you might be able to buy the domain name from them (at an ugly premium usually)
Or you can register a new domain name with different spelling and map it to your blog here – can you play around a bit with your initials and name and find a variation that is not being used?
The person could be legit or it could be a squatter that just wants the old name and a bit of traffic –
I will also flag this for the staff in case you need help with a refund

Hi Joanna,
As auxclass mentioned, the domain mapping upgrade won’t do anything if you don’t own the domain anymore. I see you already cancelled the upgrade for a refund. (Please note it can sometimes take up to 10 business days for refunds to appear on your bank statement.)
I’d also recommend what auxclass mentioned — you could try an alternate domain name like joannaaislinn.co or joannaaislinn.net (instead of joannaaislinn.com). Or you could try a different spelling or other name to use for your domain name.
Please let me know if I can do anything to help!

Thank you, Auxclass and Rachel! I appreciate your input, help and suggestions.
I suppose if I had a tad more savvy on this topic, I wouldn’t be asking the following question: how do .co and .net differ from .com? And I can simply pick one I want?
Thnx again!

Hi Joanna, although I have no knowledge of wordpress (I’m here to learn and ask questions too), I CAN answer this one :)
The domain extensions (.co, .com, .net) make no difference. Some may cost you a few more dollars to register but that’s it. HOWEVER, the difference is that many people are NOT all that internet savvy and you MAY run into problems if you get a .CO domain and when telling people where they go, they forget or automatically go to the .COM domain and wind up in the wrong place.
If you have to keep your joanna…etc domain (and I CAN understand that as I like having MY stuff), I suggest going with a completely different extension and get something like .net instead.
It’ll save you some headache in the future.
George

Thanks to all of you who offered info and/or assistance!
I wound up going with a .net extension. Find me at joannaaislinn.net! Visitors welcome!
