Domain change difficulties

  • Unknown's avatar

I changed the domain of my blog today and now I cannot access it from the new domain or the old one. Every time I attempt to go to the site, it says the server dropped the connection. I know there can be some difficulties when changing, but is this common? What can I do to fix it?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey there!

It appears as if you’ve only just changed your name servers with your domain registrar. When you adjust those settings, it can take up to 72-hours for the changes to take place, and for your site to appear properly online.

You can view the public information for the domain becoming.com here:
    http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/results.jsp?domain=becoming.com

You’ll notice that the name servers have not yet changed to ours, here at WordPress.com:

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

Once those change, your site will be mapped properly. In the meantime, if you want your visitors to be able to see onebecoming.wordpress.com, you can set that as your primary domain. Simply go to your Domain page in your Dashboard:

    https://onebecoming.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Change onebecoming.wordpress.com to your primary domain. Once your domain is ready to go, you can change back to your custom domain as your primary.

Could you tell me with whom you’ve registered your domain? I see that you’ve mapped it here, but registered it elsewhere.

Thanks so much! All the best to you.

I believe I registered it with wordpress.com. This is the only site that I have done business with.

    Hi again!

Then, could it be the case that you didn’t register the domain name at all? I am showing that you set up domain mapping for that domain name, but if you didn’t go through the whole registration process, then you don’t own it. Someone else does. In fact, if I look closely at the ownership info, it appears as if Avon Products, Inc. has had the domain name registered since 1996.

You can see that information for yourself here:
    http://who.is/whois/becoming.com

So, unfortunately, you’ll have to choose a new custom domain name for your site. When you go to add it here, you’ll click Add a Domain Name. If the name is currently available for sale, you’ll see that warning.

I can disconnect becoming.com from your WordPress.com site if you’d like, since it won’t connect to a domain you don’t own. Let me know. I don’t want to disconnect it without your permission!

Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much!

Well that would make sense. I tried to and I thought it went through, then tried to map it there. But obviously not.
If you could remove it, that would be awesome.
    Thank you!

    Hey there!

You got it! I deleted that mapped domain. Now you can start fresh and register a new custom domain.

I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

Hey! Another question. So if I’m trying to add a domain under my recent premium upgrade, do I need to pay for it? If, by my mistake for becoming.com, I voided that ability, can I get it back?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi again!

You should NOT have to pay for your domain, as you have the Premium upgrade. Are you being asked to complete a financial transaction when you register? Please let me know and I’ll check into this immediately.

    Many thanks.
