Domain change not working

While creating my blog, I decided to change the domain/url. Once it said it had saved, I launched the blog. However, it launched with one of the domain names/URLs I had decided against, when it had specifically said the change had saved. How can I correct this without signing up for a paid plan? The site should have completed the change fully, since I didn’t launch the blog until it said it had saved.

We cannot edit any blog URLs. If you want to change the .wordpress.com blog address ie. the URL starting with http:// then you must be logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog to do that and the URL you desire must be available. If so, then you can change the URL by using the guide http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/Be sure to locate the correct page http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/dashboard-e1371648470893.png
Changing a URL is a permanent and irreversible act. No changed or deleted blog URLs are recycled here, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.

While I was setting up the blog, the URL was emilietries.wordpress.com and while still in the process of the original setup (aka before the blog was saved/launched) I changed it to thewingitwife.wordpress.com . The site said it had saved the change, so I launched/saved the blog because I was now content with the setup. Post-launch however, I noticed that the URL on my blog still says emilietries.wordpress.com . I went into my account to try to change it again, but it wouldn’t let me click on the Change Address thing. I can’t remember how I got to that page, but it was different from the link/directions you provided just now.
I followed your directions just now, and it said it saved the changes. The old URL gives a dead blog page inconsistent with what I had set up on it, which is fine since I’m not going to be using that one anytime soon. The problem is that when I type in my new URL, the screen says “Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Please log in and go to the Domains Upgrades page of your blog to use this domain.”
