domain confusion
-
dear friends,
plz bear with me as i have no prior experience with domains. i have read the support pages on domain registration and mapping, but i’m still confused.my blog is http://www.cricjunoon.wordpress.com, what i want to do is, remove the “wordpress” bit and make it http://www.cricjunoon.com. i dont want to do the additional bit, which is to redirect visitors from cricjunoon.wordpress.com to cricjunoon.com because my blog is still pretty new and i have the email addresses of everyone who visits it anyway.
also im concerned about the money- if this costs me $10 a year for example, at the end of the year will another $10 be automatically deducted from my bank account by wordpress, or will i have to inform them some time before that i dont want them to take money out of my account (assuming i dont want the domain anymore)? i’m asking this because i only plan to run this blog for about 6 months, not more than that.
plz help me by giving step by step instructions in simple language. sorry to be a pain!

If you do not want to redirect, then you will have to register the domain name, hire a web host and upload the software from wordpress.org to your new web host. This will run you about $6 to $15 per month between hosting and domain registration costs depending on how much bandwidth and storage space you need.
With domain mapping from wordpress.com, you will get an email that will remind you that you need to renew. It does not happen automatically.

thanks both!
thesacredpath seems to be saying it will cost me $6-15 per month whereas wiidude says on this dedicated forum that its a one off fee of $15 (for the year i presume).
which is it?
-
For a domain name and domain mapping, it is $15 if you do both at one time. The $6-15 per month is if you have your own web host (such as bluehost or godaddy, not at wordpress.com).
Do be aware that having your own domain name and domain mapping through wordpress.com does not remove the restrictions on advertising and such here at wordpress.com. You still have those restrictions because your blog is still hosted at wordpress.com.
-
so if i opt for hosting my blog at wordpress.com, i can have the url http://www.cricjunoon.com, but the only restriction would be that i wont be able to advertise? i’m ok with that.
and its a one off payment of $15, yes? which wordpress will NOT automatically renew at the end of the year?
thanks for clarifying.
-
No, that is NOT the only restriction. ALL existing restrictions on WP.com blogs apply except for the domain name.
The payment is PER YEAR, so if you don’t renew at the end of the year your blog goes back to whatever.wordpress.com and whatever.com ceases to exist.
