Domain Confusion

As of right now, I have the base plan with wordpress in the URL but I would like to have a domain without it. My problem is I’ve looked at this site in several different places and the price changes. When I went to ‘add’ a domain it said $18/year but then when I went to the next page it was $8.25/month with a total of $99/year. It didn’t make sense to me. I had a friend tell me it was less than $20 on wordpress to purchase an annual domain because I don’t really want to spend $100 for something other people have said shouldn’t be that much. Thank you for anyone who can respond and clarify this.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

It used to be possible to add a domain for $18 a year, but it’s not any more so you shouldn’t see that option. Domains can now only be added as part of a plan. However, if you can tell me on exactly which page you saw the $18 option, and if possible can upload a screen shot of it to your media library for me I’d be happy to look into it.

As for our plans, you can see all of them here:

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Note that the plans are billed yearly. The monthly cost is only displayed for comparison purposes.

    Hi,

I’m still getting used to using the wordpress but I saw this on the stats page along the left hand side where it gives you options to add blogs, pages, etc. It had an “add” button next to the word domain so I clicked it and there it popped up with my options
mommywantssleep.com $18/year then it had an “add” button
mommywantsrest.com $18/year then it had an “add” button

When I clicked add next to mommywantssleep.com option the next screen showed me a total with the premium plan of $8.25/month totaling $99.

This is where I am confused because I was told my other users it was a lot less to have your own domain on wordpress so the $18/ year enticed me.

I’m sorry the button next to the $18/year was “upgrade”

I just went back and it’s not showing me that anymore (of course) but it did show me a new price of $25/year. I took a screen shot on my phone but not sure how to load to my media library. I will give it a shot.

  • At this page you can upload the screen shot under Media ->Add New:

Ok I uploaded the screen shot

  • Thank you for the screen shot. I also think I know what’s going on based on that.

You will see that next to the first domain on the list it says “Free with your plan” with a check mark next to it. It shows that because you’ve already added a plan to your site, and that first domain is included with your plan. The additional domains are showing prices, as once you have a plan you can add extra domains at those prices.

Can you please do the following: Click the shopping cart icon top-right on that page and remove all the items in the cart. Then refresh the Add Domain screen again. Do you still see the per-domain pricing then?

While it’s not possible to buy only a domain, we have a cheaper plan called the Personal Plan you can look at. In addition to the domain, this plan will also remove ads from your site and give you access to live chat support. To add that plan, click on the Plans link rather than domains. After you buy the plan you can then add the domain.

If you decide you don’t want the plan, you can cancel it for a partial refund within 30 days, keeping only the domain from there on out.

I totally understand what you’re saying but it DID say $18/year the first time I went to it which is weird if WordPress doesn’t offer that anymore.

    Thank you for the information.

  • It sounds like that might be a glitch. I know some changes were made to the pricing pages over the past two days, so it might temporarily have shown the incorrect info while the pages were being updated.

I’ve sent you an email with more information.
