Domain Confusion
-
What is the difference between using something like bluehost.com for my blog and upgrading to the premium version for my blog?
I already have a domain “emichu.com” with Volusion, that I used to set up my ecommerce website. But now I want the domain name to be for my blog. What do I need to do? Should I use bluehost.com or just upgrade to the premium version? I’m really confused.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can’t do e-commerce here – against the terms of service and get your blog suspended

I’m not trying to do e-commerce here. I already shut down my e-commerce website. I just want to still use the domain name for my blog.

Then use these instructions $ 13.– / year

You can do e-commerce on Blue Host –
No upgrade here other than the VIP program will permit e-commerce and the VIP program starts around $ 30,000 a year and up, then add your staff costs on top of that

E-Commerce is not my question…
I just want to know what is the difference between using bluehost and $99 upgrade premium to my blog.
-
Hey @emichu,
The differences, in a nutshell:
WordPress.com is a hosted service. You pay a small fee for different premium upgrades. There are some limitations, e.g. you cannot run advertising and you cannot install plugins. It’s a good choice if you don’t want to deal with technical stuff and are happy with the features that WordPress.com provides.
WordPress hosted through a service like Bluehost (or HostGator, or DreamHost, etc…) is different. You’re not paying for a WordPress site – you’re paying for a web hosting account. The support staff can help with hosting problems, but not necessarily WordPress problems. This is a more technical, DIY approach.
If you’re just blogging as a hobby and don’t intend to run ads, then I suggest paying for the WordPress.com upgrades and hosting your blog here. :)

Thank you for your help!
I’m in the process of becoming a newbie graphic designer and would like to put my portfolio on here, and other social media etc.
So, stupid question…how can I link my portfolio and put my designs on here?
And also, since I already have a domain, would I just use the $13 option to map it?

yes that is correct
If the portfolio is online at another site – you can put a link in the Sidebar with a Text Widget or use a custom menu and put a link in directly

I haven’t made my portfolio yet, so no linking…
What are some ways I could put my designs on the website? I want it to be on the same website.Sorry, this is all new to me..

Hey @emichu,
For a graphic designer, I highly recommend reading up on image galleries in WordPress (http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/) and going with a clean theme like Widely (http://widelydemo.wordpress.com/) or Hatch (http://hatchdemo.wordpress.com/) that puts the focus on images. The site design should showcase your work, not compete with it.

Thank you both so much!
That’s a lot to learn lol, but I’ll start looking into it and hopefully it will all make sense.
Thanks again!

The basics are really fairly easy to learn, just looks bad when you are starting
You be welcome & good luck
