Domain – don’t want to change DNS

I want to add a domain to the blog, but don’t want to change the DNS, is there no way to point the DNS to the blog with a CNAME or something?

    thanks in advance

I don’t think you can, not the way WordPress is set up. I was able to set the CNAME for a subdomain of mine and point it to a WordPress blog, but for the main www-domain I had to edit the name servers according to WordPress’ instructions:

Thanks, the CNAME should do the trick. Will try that now.

One possibility is to go through everything normally as instructed by WordPress.com and then, once everything is working, revert the name server settings on your domain to whatever you want (but being sure to add a CNAME entry for your blog host name).

HOWEVER – this may break if by chance WordPress.com does some sort of regular or irregular checks on whether they are the designated authoritatve for the domain. I bring this up as a concern because when initially pointing a domain, WordPress.com will refuse to associate the domain with the blog unless it can see that it’s been set up as authoritative for the domain based on their instructions.

Please let us know how this works. I would much rather have control over my domain records for things like mail and subdomains or other records than having Google Apps as the only option (which isn’t even guaranteed to work since Google can arbitrarily reject the domain name wanting to be mapped to their services).

The CNAME actually did not work, I gave it a go.

tdksucks; I might give your suggestion a go. It’s a bit odd that wordpress is expecting us to lose complete control over the DNS records if we want to point a domain to a blog (and pay for it).

To me it looks very simple, just add the domain name that I paid for to the webserver and we’ll do the rest of the DNS management.
