Howdy! Sorry to hear that your domain wasn’t renewed in time. Fortunately, most WordPress.com domains fall under a grace period of 10-14 days, allowing you to renew without issue. After the grace period ends, the domain enters a redemption period. While you can sometimes still retrieve the domain, the registrar will charge an additional $80 redemption fee to get it back.
Another option is to wait roughly 80 days after the domain enters the redemption period, when it will be placed back on the market. Just know that while a domain is on the market or in the redemption period, other people have the ability to purchase that domain. If you would like, you can read more about it here.

Hello, great to know that i can retrieve it. the issue is that the website related to my project was created by another person who was managing it. And i changed the contact details but didn’t get any notification about the expiry date.
When it has been expired and can i upgrade it at the same time ?

If you are able to reclaim the domain, you may want to look into turning on automatic domain renewal. You can turn on automatic renewal by going to https://wordpress.com/me/purchases and clicking on the domain you wish to renew. This will ensure that the domain remains yours until either your billing info changes, or you turn off automatic renewal.
