Allowing a domain to expire
When you allow your domain expire, it then goes through a process that can take several months to complete described at https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/.
If you are in the grace period you will not have to agree to pay a redemption fee set by the domain name registrar that wordpress.COM staff cannot waive.
Otherwise, if you want Staff to try to recover the domain for you then you will have to agree to pay the redemption fee.

If you’re logged into the account that is associated with your expired domain, they will look up its status and get in touch with details.If you are not logged in under the correct username account then clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies prior to logging into the associated account, and provide the domain URL here.
If you did not register the underlying .wordpress.com site then contact the person with the username account who registered it.

Hi there,
That domain expired on 10 May has already been removed from our system and is currently in redemption with our registrar. It is still possible for me to recover the domain at this point, but our registrar charges a $80 fee to restore a domain from redemption. Let me know if you agree to that fee and I can get the recovery process started.
We and our registrar partner both sent several reminder emails before and after that domain expired. Please check if those did not land in your spam folder, or another filter in your email client.
