Domain expired though my account shows current until May
-
I’m in a panic as my domain expired after transferring to WordPress. All the contents. I’m confused why it expired since I transferred it to WordPress, I was under the impression that it would remain current since my payment is current. I changed hosting from Bluehost to WordPress premium. Does that not transfer the function of renewal to WordPress. Also your customer service is horrible.

When you map to an existing domain you have to renew the domain name purchase annually with the registrar you purchased it from WHOIS, and you also have to renew the domain mapping upgrade with wordpress.COM annually.
No Domain Mapping Found
There is no domain mapping upgrade for derekhurst.net/. If you would like to use this domain you will first need to set up domain mapping. http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-a-domain/ -

Hi @dwhurst, it looks like you’ve already renewed the domain, so that’s good.
Just to confirm, the domain registration is indeed still with Bluehost. We aren’t able to accept incoming domain transfers at this point, so you will need to continue renewing the domain through Bluehost, or (if they require hosting to keep the domain going) transfer it to a registrar that can accept incoming transfers.
Your domain mapping (included in Premium) helps our servers recognize the domain, but the domain registration will still need to be kept current. I hope that helps.

Thanks….
On a hunch I renewed the domain under bluehost before you posted, “supernova”. I was surprised that this function of transferring the domain registration wasn’t automatic with my Premium enrollment. I had signed up with WordPress thinking that I would have these services (including registration) in one location. I found out that I was wrong. Still some things about this domain / web site business that I’m discovering as I stumble through maintaining my own site.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Domain ownership is quite different from hosting or other upgrades. One domain can be used with many services, but only one person or entity can own a domain.
Transferring a domain is a process of unlocking the domain, getting authentication codes, providing them to the new registrar, who must request the transfer. Then you have to approve it, and your old registrar has to approve it too (or ignore the transfer request until it’s approved automatically). It’s a bit complicated, but all of that is to help keep people from accidentally losing control over their domain name. Because once a domain is owned by someone else, it can be very difficult to get it back.
I hope that helps!
