Currently have a free WordPress site. Wanting to use our existing GoDaddy domain for the WordPress site however leave the e-mail where it is (currently on Host Gator). I am thinking that instead of changing DNS records I just want to change A records for @ & www
I assume I need to change my plan as well. Sorry but the free site Help section is not assisting me much.

Hey there, happy to help!
To use a custom domain with your WordPress.com site, you will need to change your plan, yes! Any of our paid plans support setting a custom domain as the site’s primary address, so I’d recommend taking a look at our Pricing page to check out other features that come with each plan, to consider what else your site might need: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
If you’re not sure where to start, our Premium plan is very popular, as this gives you access to our Live Chat Support 24h a day Monday through Friday, Premium Themes, the ability to customize your site with CSS, and even monetization opportunities like our WordAds program.
Once you’ve picked up a paid plan, you can certainly use your existing GoDaddy domain with your WordPress.com site, and continue to use HostGator as your email provider. Connecting a domain from another registrar is free with any of our paid plans, and this guide will walk you through it!
If you already own a domain name with another provider, you can use that domain with your WordPress.com site. Once you complete the steps below, instead of your site address being something like yourgroovysite.wordpress.com, your site’s address will be something like yourgroovydomain.com. Follow the steps in this guide to keep your domain registered with your current provider and use it to showWe actually still recommend updating your domain’s name servers to WordPress.com, and then you can add your email provider’s required DNS records to the domain through your WordPress.com dashboard, to reconnect the domain to your email provider. This method is more stable than using just A records, since IP addresses can change without warning, but you can also connect a domain with A and CNAME records instead, if you find that works best for you.
I hope this helps! Let us know if you have any follow up questions we can answer – hope to see you over in live chat support soon so we can help you grow your site!
