  i bought a domain
  i am trying to point said domain from wordpress
  its asking for $96 a year. this can’t be right.

  am i doing something wrong?

  Do you wish to use your domain here at WordPress.com?

  Then you need to map it here, and before mapping it will ask you to upgrade your plan. 96$ cost you are seeing is for Premium Plan.

  You can choose Personal plan as well which cost 48$

  Each paid plan comes with a free domain credit you can use to either register a new domain, or transfer one you already own
