Domain help

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello all

Looking for help as I am not very technical 🙄.

So someone once bought a domain for me on godaddy.com.

They linked it to my blog. The whole thing worked well but now it seems to have expired.

In my personal plan I can register a free domain and would like to use the one we previously used via godaddy.

How can I transfer that domain? I tried to use it in my plan but it did not work…

    Any help is muchly appreciated!

    Sam

If you let a domain expire then you can’t transfer it here if you no longer own it. What was the address of the domain? If it was

Then it would be preferable to try and renew the domain at GoDaddy and then map it to WordPress.com. GoDaddy may or may not release the domain and if they do there is the chance it could be purchased by a “squatter” before you get a chance and who then holds the address to ransom.

    OK thanks.

As I said… I was not managing it before. Can I just buy it or do I need to ‘bid’?

  • Hi there,

As the domain is currently parked with GoDaddy, it means it’s not available for registration, and you won’t be able to register it with us at this time.

Right now, the only way to obtain ownership of that domain is to bid on it with GoDaddy and hope your bid is high enough to get the domain once the auction ends. If no one bids on the domain, it will enter redemption, and eventually be released, but this can still take several weeks, and there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to buy the domain once it is released – as @themagicrobot mentions above, there’s a very real chance a domain squatter can buy it before you do, who will then try to sell the domain back to you at a profit.

If you still have contact with the person who set up that domain for you, your best option is to ask them to get in touch with GoDaddy to recover the domain, and then they can transfer ownership of the domain to you instead.
