Domain help

I already have a domain and I am currently hosted by another web hoster. I am wanting to know how I would transfer my domain to wordpress, so I can customize my site using wordpress.
I have talked with my current web hoster and have an authorization code and have made my domain public. What do I need to do now?
I want to make sure my domain will transfer before canceling with my current web host.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress.com does not accept incoming domain transfers.

The subscription for domain mapping an existing domain is $13.00 per year per blog. And you need to have an underlying .wordpress.com blog URL to domain map from to the domain URL.

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog and purchase upgrades for it.

If you would like to use your domain name purchased elsewhere and map from your free hosted wordpress.com blog to it, then you will first need to set up domain mapping by following these steps. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

After you make the domain mapping purchase here > Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades and do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Is there a number that I can call and speak with someone from WordPress?

  • Unknown's avatar

There is no phone support here. This is a peer support forum where Volunteers and Staff work cooperatively to deliver WordPress.com support. Volunteers answer most questions posted into forum threads and Staff monitor. When Volunteers cannot provide the required support we flag threads for Staff attention.

I know what I posted above is correct, however, I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

I want to make sure I map my domain correctly. I plan on mapping it tomorrow afternoon.

I have purchased the premium package from WordPress ($99). I have also added my domain to my blog, under store- domains.

    Tomorrow I plan to:
Contact 1and1 and change my name servers in my register to the following: NS1.WORDPRESS.COM, NS2.WORDPRESS.COM, & NS3.WORDPRESS.COM.
After doing that I will add in my MX records under setting-domains-edit DNS records. My MX records are as follows: MX00.1and1.com and MX01.1and1.com. I just type it in just like that in the box provided?

Do I need to get a validation code from 1and1? They gave me an authorization code: pf5aX*DpC35L, is this the same thing?

After doing that I wait 24-28 hours, and then my domain will be linked to WordPress & my email addresses with 1and1 will work?

If I have forgotten any steps or have the steps wrong please let me know.

I want this process to be a smooth as possible, since all of my emails are from the 1and1 address for the business.

    Thank you!

No since you are not transferring domain name registration

The MX records don’t look quite correct to me – but each email host has a slightly different way of doing things – you need to get the MX (and any other records) information from 1&1

  • Unknown's avatar

ok, thank you. Was my other steps correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

24 to 72 hours – changes usually start after a few hours but you will be the last one to see the changes due to caching issues –

it looks like you are following these instructions – http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

your outline looks OK to me

But you need to go back and ask about the records required to have the email keep working –

it you post what you receive from 1&1 someone can review them or we can ask the staff for help with them – I tried searching the forum for 1&1 email examples and could not get the search function to work for me

When I called back they also gave me my name servers with them
    NS52.1and1.com & NS51.1and1.com. I was also given MX codes MX00.1and1.com & MX01.1and1.com.

So these look correct? Can you add them in for me after I have changed my name servers with them?

  • Hi there – I made some adjustments to the MX records you’d entered. They should work for you now, but note that when you change your name servers, it can take awhile for your email to start working again – anywhere from a few hours to 24 hours, depending. If you still have any trouble after that, let us know!

  • Incidentally, should anyone else with 1&1 come across this, here are the records I entered:

    MX 10 mx00.1and1.com.
    MX 20 mx01.1and1.com.

    I have mapped my domain.
I am wanting to create my website now, I chose a template but I do not want it to be a blog, where people can type on it… Is there a setting I need to change to make it that way?

There is no switch you can flip. This is all about how you choose to structure the site.

A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication.

A website is a page based site designed to operate as a one way means of communication ie. a noticeboard.

Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based. For greater clarity read > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/07/25/create-a-wordpress-website-step-by-step/
    Then see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

The only themes we can use on free hosted WordPress.com blogs are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/

On one hand, none of the characteristic “blog” features like categories, tags, authors, dates, etc. can be removed from a free hosted WordPress.com blog, without purchasing an annually renewable custom design upgrade and doing the required CSS editing.

On the other hand, one can edit a WordPress.org theme free of charge. Read the comparison > WordPress.com and WordPress.org: The Differences http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I want to create a website, not a blog. I own a business and do not want everyone being able to write on my site. I keep seeing a lot of stuff about blogs, but how do I create a site?
I recently purchased the ($99) package, I sure hope I can create a website and not a blog.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hi there – You can disable comments on your site in this way:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

For help on creating a website rather than a blog, check out those links that Timethief posted. They should be very helpful. If you have more specific questions as you go along, let us know!

  • Unknown's avatar

I have followed the directions from the link you sent me.

My default article settings are not checked, but the comment box is still located at the bottom of the homepage. Please help me delete this comment box.
    Thank you!

  • Unknown's avatar

Never mind about the last question. :)

To get the comments off of the home page go to pages-home page-quick edit- uncheck the show comments box.
That may help someone else in the future.
    Thanks.

  • Hi there – Wonderful! I’m glad you figured it out. Once you’ve changed the defaults in Settings->Discussion, that will apply to all posts/pages you publish in future, but for those you already published, you have to disable them on each individually. :)
