domain host

I am very illiterate with website building. I am a business owner in the dog service industry.. I currently have a domain host for my website. The website has recently crashed or corrupted in some way. My website builder used wordpress. org. I have had a website since probably 2003 or 2004. Apparently it had an old theme paper_lantern. WordPress. org is not accepting my username and pw. I created a new one and guess I should start from scratch? I am at a loss. Since I am a completely new to building from scratch should I move my domain host to wordpress.com and try to build from there. I looked at new themes on wordpress.org but all of it is a foreign language to me.

  • Hi there,

We absolutely welcome you to move your site over to us here at WordPress.com and have a wealth of resources to help you get restarted:

Have you checked out http://wordpress.com/learn? That site is designed to guide you step by step from the very beginning of your blogging journey all the way to having it completely set up, launched, and running.

Please check that site out and let me know if you have any questions.

Regarding your domain currently hosted elsewhere, you do indeed have the option to map or transfer that domain to WordPress.com as well.

First, you transfer the domain without having to purchase a paid plan. However, using a domain at WordPress.com without a plan prevents you from making the domain primary. When someone types in your custom domain, it will automatically forward to your WordPress.com subdomain:

Otherwise, you can purchase a WordPress.com plan and set your domain as the primary domain.

The biggest factors to consider would be who you want to host your domain, how much your domain host currently costs compared to the domain only or domain + plans packages we offer here, and whether or not you want to host your domain and site at the same place.

If you transfer the domain to WordPress.com, we’ll manage the domain. Assuming you want the domain primary, you’ll pay for the mapping and the plan here (domain is included within the plan price for the first year).

But, if you keep the domain with your current host and map the domain to WordPress.com, your current host will continue to manage the domain and you’ll still need to pay them for hosting your domain.

    Hope that helps.

Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks!
