domain host does not have updated email address?

  • Unknown's avatar

A friend of mine is doing some work on my website, and has told me to expect a code from WordPress to authorize access. He has requested it at least twice and I have not received anything. The only thing I can think of is that the domain host (Wild West / Go Daddy, I believe) has not been given my current email address (updated a few months ago) which is different from the one I signed up with.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there,

Are you aware that your friend is trying to transfer your domain away from us? That’s what the code they told you about does – it lets whoever has access to the code transfer a domain from one domain provider to another. It has absolutely nothing to do with authorizing access to your site.

The domain transfer code is sent to the email address provided when you registered the domain. You’ll find that under My Site ->Upgrades ->Domains ->Contact Information. That email address is not the same as the one associated with your WordPress.com account at https://wordpress.com/me/account, and our logs show our emails to that address are bouncing.

Please make sure that address is correct, and update it if not. If you want to transfer the domain away from WordPress.com, also make sure you opt out of the transfer lock when you do this update, else the domain will be locked for transfer for 60 days. Also note that you’ll need to confirm this update via two separate emails sent to the new address, and your WordPress.com account email respectively.

Lastly just a word of caution: from your description and the activity on your account it sounds like you let your friend log into your WordPress.com account directly? We do not recommend that at all – no one but you should ever access your account, and we assume any and all actions taken by your username were taken by you.

If you need someone else to work on your WordPress.com site, it’s better to have them register their own WordPress.com username account, and then invite them as a user, giving them only the permissions they need for what they have to do:
