Domain Host Transfer

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I am having trouble finding a direct answer to my domain question. I am aware that there is a difference between domain registration and domain hosting. I am looking to change my host from WordPress to another hosting website. Do I still have to follow the same process as if I were transferring domain registration? (i.e. having to get an authorization code, etc.) Or can I just simply sign up at the hosting website and have them handle everything?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Howdy Tamara!

Tools such as cPanel are not used on WordPress.com as we have our own dashboard that allows you manage your blog.

If you want to move your domain from WordPress.com to another registrar such as Hostgator, you will need to follow these instructions:

    Transfer Domain To Another Registrar

You registered your domain on September 2nd. As the instructions above say, ICANN, which regulates domain transfers, has a rule which prevents us from transferring a domain for 60 days following a purchase. Which means that your domain transfer could only be processed on November 1st.

Once your domain is transferred, you can keep your blog hosted on WordPress.com, or host it elsewhere. If you wish to host your blog with a different service provider, this will mean that you will be using the self-hosted version of WordPress, and responsible for your own updates.

Your blog and domain are currently hosted on WordPress.com, which is a hosted service, so we take care of keeping your blog secure and the software up to date.

If you let me know what you want to do with a tool like cPanel, perhaps I can help you figure out how to do that here.

If you’re sure that you want to move to a different host, then let me know if you need any help with the above instructions or have any more questions.

Okay so first of all, I’m now becoming extremely upset at all of this. One, WordPress doesn’t say all of that before paying for a domain from them. I already read the instructions regarding transferring my domain to another Registrar. However, I am still confused.

I do not care about keeping my domain registered with WordPress. All I want to do is be able to install WordPress and use cPanel so that I can create my website from scratch, or rather install my own themes, etc. Is this not possible until I transfer my domain? Please clarify this because it is becoming rather frustrating. I am currently studying abroad and am looking to start my own blog as well as creating my own website for my portfolio. Please respond at your earliest convenience.

    Thanks.

    Hey Tamara,

Sorry you’re frustrated, unfortunately, like all domain registrars, we are bound by ICANN regulations.

You can certainly sign up with another hosting provider now or at anytime, install the self-hosted version of WordPress there, use their cPanel, etc.

You need to change the nameservers on your domain to the ones provided by your new host by following these instructions:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/

However, you could also just start blogging here on WordPress.com until we’re past ICANN’s mandatory 60 day period, and then move your domain and blog to a new provider. It’s easy to export your posts and pages from your blog here and import them to one you host elsewhere.

If you like, we’ll do the domain mapping of your domain for free until the end of November so that you can start using your domain right away.

Let me know if I can help.

    Best,
